Kingdom Under Fire II : preview

Gamers in the United States might not be too familiar with the Kingdom Under Fire series. Even though role-playing games are popular in North America, Kingdom Under Fire doesn't have the same sort of following that other big RPG names do. So when I was on my way to a meeting with representatives from South Korean publisher Blueside, I didn't expect anything more than an everyday RPG. Soon after my meeting began, I came to the conclusion that Kingdom Under Fire II was my biggest surprise at this year's Tokyo Game Show. This action RPG looks stunning.

Those that haven't played any other Kingdom Under Fire game needn't worry -- this is a title that can stand on its own. The game combines the epic action of large-scale battles with the online functionality found in massively multiplayer online games. That formula alone sounds fantastic, but Kingdom Under Fire II is made all the sweeter by its incredible visuals.

I, unfortunately, wasn't able to play Kingdom Under Fire II for myself, but I didn't need to. The raw enthusiasm and pride the folks at Blueside have for their game is palpable and they played several missions for me to show me exactly why people should be excited about their project. Kingdom Under Fire II allows players to create their own hero that can belong to one of four different classes (more classes will be added later). Not only do players control the hero character on the battlefield, but they can also command troops at the same time, giving the game a pinch of real-time strategy.

In the game, players will be able to execute traditional combos with their hero character and cast a wide variety of spells, including techniques that assist the friendly troops around them. When I was watching the game being played, the hero would charge into a group of enemies and unleash a torrent of attacks, while his troops charged in behind him. I was especially impressed with the camera work during battles, as the screen will shake and shift with the action, making the experience much more urgent than if the player's view was static.

Although it looked like a button-masher at first, Kingdom Under Fire II requires some definite skill, as players must jump between troop divisions on the fly to issue commands. During one particular mission, the Blueside representative had to continuously switch between his main troop and a ranged support troop further up the battlefield. These support troops would unleash deadly volleys that peppered the hero's enemies from afar.

The real beauty of the game, however, comes from the sheer spectacle of what's happening on the screen at one time. Hundreds, if not thousands, of nicely detailed units clash on the battlefield as arrows and gunfire saturate the sky. I was blown away when massive monsters entered the fray, stomping across the war-torn hills and scattering soldiers like pebbles through the air. In a trailer that was shown to me, a small group of dragons descended on the battlefield and unleashed green fire onto the helpless soldiers below.

The action of Kingdom Under Fire II was fantastic, but there's plenty of hardcore RPG goodness as well. There's a robust character creation system in place for designing your ideal hero, and almost everything in the game can be tweaked, from your clothing and accessories to the troops under your command. In fact, I was told that there would be more than 100 different troop types available at the start, meaning you will have tons of soldiers to work with as you travel across the world.

This is where the game's massively multiplayer functionality comes into play. The world of Kingdom Under Fire II is a persistent one that can be accessed by thousands of players at once. When you travel across the world map (on foot or by airship, which you can purchase further into the game), you'll see other players traveling in the same environment. Although only eight players can participate in a battle at once, many more will exist in your game world, which is designed to enhance the feeling of community in the game.

Kingdom Under Fire II is an example of a low-profile game that's impressive because of the great efforts of the developers behind it. Of course, there's no way for me to know at this point in time if the game controls well and is fun after extended periods of play, but I have reason to suspect that this game is one to look forward to.

Kingdom Under Fire II is tentatively scheduled for a North American launch at the end of next year. The game is being developed for PCs and consoles, though console specifics have yet to be unannounced.

Pandora Saga Overview

Pandora Saga combines elements of magic and strategic war tactics to create a challenging gaming experience. This Japanese MMORPG is centered on three warring nations in medieval Europe. Players have their pick from six distinct races, each possessing extraordinary abilities. There are four basic classes in Pandora Saga that can later progress to twenty-eight higher classes. The first class change starts at level 20. Listed below are the four basic classes:

Warrior – Warriors are masters in hand-to-hand combat. They specialize in the art of the sword and melee fighting. Warriors are key players in battle due to direct attacks and ability to withstand a considerable amount of damage from opponents.

Scout – Scouts are skilled archers. They serve as deadly assassins striking enemies from far off ranges. Scouts can quickly attack assisting aiding party members in intense battles.

Acolyte – Acolytes are valuable players. They possess the ability to keep a group alive in the midst of war. Acolytes cast healing and support spells that can revive multiple members.

Mage – Mages are one of the most powerful classes when it comes to battle. They cast a variety of magic spells that deliver massive damage to opposing enemies. Their only weakness is close-range fighting.

GodsWar Online review

GodsWar Online is a 2D fantasy MMORPG based loosely on Greek Mythology. Players start their adventures either in Sparta or Athens than fight their way across the Greek isles. GodsWar Online boosts simple gameplay, a fast experience rate and a built in bot that automates gameplay.

What sets it apart from the competition is the unique theme based on Greek Mythology and faction wars between the two major Greek city-states, Sparta and Athenes. GodsWar Online has a pet system and an interesting afk boting program built in that allows gamers to set their characters up to grind without player input. While there are a plenty of quests during the early levels and the experience rate is brisk, things begin to slow down as you approach the late game.

CLASSES

Warrior - The front line fighters who take the brunt of the enemy’s attacks. They can inflict damage but their main strength is their high defense and HP which allows them to tank for their teammates.

Champion - The melee damage dealers. Champions use spears to inflict as much damage as possible on their opponents. They lack the high defense and health warriors possess.

Priest - A supportive class that has powerful healing and enhancement spells that keep the priest’s allies in peak shape. The priest does contain offensive spells but excels in a team environment.

Mage - The primary damage dealers of GodsWar Online. Mages can deal massive damage with their spells but have low defense and health which leaves them vulnerable.

Another useful feature is the AFK mode. You can change the AFK setting by choosing what skills should be, including drinking potions when your life has reached half-life. When AFK mode is activated your character will start attacking any monsters nearby (note that they will not attack other faction’s players). When you’re on AFK mode looting is not possible. The AFK mode is useful for farming Talent Points(TP’s).

Dota 2 preview

Some of you might be thinking, “What is Dota 2?” Dota began as a user-made modification for Warcraft 3 and has grown into one of the most played online games in the world. Following in the tradition of Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, Portal, and Alien Swarm, Dota 2 is the result of Valve hiring the community developers who built the mod and giving them the chance to finally build a full product out of their idea with the help of a professional team of developers and artists at Valve.

As for the gameplay, it’s a little hard to describe. The camera is set in the traditional RTS perspective, but it wouldn’t be fair to call Dota an RTS. And while each hero starts at level 1, and many times hits the level cap of 25, it wouldn’t be fair to call it an RPG.
Lots of people have tried to assign various genre names to Dota, but we think Action RTS is probably the most descriptive. And while we don’t spend a lot of time trying to figure out what genre the game is inventing, we can’t stop playing it internally and we’re pretty excited to show everyone how we’re doing.
This site is where you can come to follow us along as we build the game. The first four images we shipped with the initial announcement are just the start of us showing you our work as we build it. We’re all looking forward to getting more of the game in front of you all.

GetAmped 2 review

GetAmped 2 is a fighting MMO set within the city of Wingdom.  Players choose from five classes, and are given a chance to try out their selection in the game’s tutorial before committing to it.  After a mock battle against their trainer, players are free to decorate their personal room, explore the various areas of the city and, most important, fight.  There are two general match types in GetAmped 2.  Those that take place in the GAT Stadium (which involve players fighting one another), and co-op missions initiated within Mega Force HQ.  GetAmped 2 is a huge improvement over its predecessor, which many may know under the name ‘Splash Fighters.’

Classes - Soldier, Knight, Hero, Spy.

GetAmped 2 was released on December 27th by CyberStep, and is a huge improvement over its predecessor, which some of you may know as Splash Fighters.  As a free-to-play fighting MMO, GetAmped 2 offers a wide selection of game modes including both competitive and cooperative play.  The game is dialogue-heavy, and even allows players to decorate their private room, giving the game an RPG flavor.

Amped Up Warriors
With a client size of only 240 mb, GetAmped 2 is almost guaranteed to work on even the oldest machines.  Downloading and installing the game is fast, but players should remember to manually ‘activate’ the game after registering an account.  GetAmped also publishes HolyBeast Online, and players can share a single login for these two games.  Players use their email address as their username, and only a single character is allowed per account.  After logging in for the first time, the character creation menu will appear.  There are currently five classes in the game and each is available in two forms.  The five classes are: Soldier, Fighter, Spy, Hero, and Knight.  There are also five stats in the game including: Str, Tec, Spd, Jmp, and Def.

Learn to Play
After selecting a class and choosing an avatar, players must run through a short tutorial that introduces them to the game’s basic controls.  All movement and combat is done with the keyboard in GetAmped 2 – the arrow keys control movement while Z,X,C,V along with the space bar make up the rest of the game’s keys.  The ‘c’ is used to perform weak attacks while ‘x’ executes a slower, but more powerful blow.  Hitting both keys simultaneously uses a ‘special’, which depletes the character’s mana supply.  The ‘v’ key is used to jump, and players can perform aerial attacks while doing so.  The space bar will use the character’s special weapon, which varies from class to class.  Soldiers start with grenades, but these special weapons can only be used a few times per battle. Double-tapping an arrow key causes the character to dash, and ‘z’ is used to set a target.  In chaotic matches, with up the eight players battling on one small arena, quickly switching targets becomes a necessity.  GetAmped 2 even allows gamepad functionality for those who prefer to play with a controller.

Tutorial Redo
After completing the tutorial, players are given the option to try a different class before accepting their current one.  Since each account only has a single character slot, it’s important to pick the class you’re most comfortable with.  An additional trial battle is available after the tutorial, but is not required.  Before moving on, players are rewarded with about a dozen items (including furniture and clothes), along with 2k in cash to start their adventures.  A young, pink-haired girl named Sparks gives new players a short tour around the floating city of Wingdom, where GetAmped 2 takes place.   The ability to explore the game world and visit such locales as the Prime Market (a giant shopping mall) and SpinSquare (a community park) is definitely one of the most distinguishing features of GetAmped 2.  No other fighting MMO to date has the same level of immersion.  The original Splash Fighters and other online fighters like Rumble Fighter are limited to a lobby, and thus remove any sense of a living virtual world.

Home Sweet Home
When the tour ends, Sparks drops players off in their own room.  All players are given a small, instanced room, in which can be decorated and visited by others.  New players can spend a few moments arranging the three pieces of furniture they received from the tutorial, and even change their room’s background color.  A skin editor option is also accessible from the player’s room, which offers a nearly limitless set of customization options.  Players can literally paint any design onto their avatar’s clothes using a set of tools that resembles those found in MS paint.  It is even possible to save designs onto your desktop and upload ones downloaded online.  Not being the most artistic individual, I went about vandalizing my avatar with splashes of blue and green paint that just made my outfit look worse, but for those who want to put in the time, GetAmped 2 offers the best customization options of any fighting game.

A Fist Full of Dialogue
The RPG elements of GetAmped 2 are most apparent in its use of dialogue.  When first visiting any area in the city, players are given an introduction via lengthy NPC chats.  For some reason, I was reminded of the GameCube title Custom Robo while playing the game.  Both are mainly fighting games with customizable parts (or weapons in this case) that contain single-player/story elements.  The brightly-colored environments and NPCs definitely improve the overall package, but at times they can get a little annoying.  A lot of the translations are off, and there are many flat out misspellings in the dialogue.  These may not of been a top priority during development and testing, but hopefully they are patched up soon.  Mercifully, all the dialogue scenes can be skipped for players who are not interested in joining the Mega Force Unit and saving Wingdom from the evil forces of the Val Shark Army.

Fighting With or Against Us
GetAmped 2 offers players two major gaming options, each in a different part of the city.  Mega Force HQ is a great place for newbies to start since it offers co-op missions, which reward points (experience), cash, and items.  Up to four players can participate in a co-op mission, of which there are dozens available.  New stages will unlock as players level up and complete previous maps.  Once inside the Mega Force HQ, players will generally receive invites to various games hosted by other players.  Navigating the lobby menu is simple, and hosting your own game doesn’t require and special rank or privileges.  For competitive play, the GAT Stadium is where the action is.  Here again, players can join or create matches.  There are currently two match types – Private and Team.  Both modes support up to eight players.  In Private matches, players fight in a large free-for-all with the goal of being the last man standing.  Team matches group players into two teams, and the last team with a member left standing is declared the winner.  Co-op missions generally consist of one ’round’, while competitive matches are made up of three rounds.

And… Action
Even with all the NPC dialogue, community features, and appearance customization, the most important part of a fighting game is the actual gameplay.  Luckily, GetAmped 2 offers plenty of improvement on this front as well.  I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Splash Fighters because the fighting always felt a bit rigged or buggy.  In this latest iteration, combat just feels more ‘fluid.’  Matches are still fast-paced, and its still easy to find yourself dead within moments if you’re not careful.  Newbies should be especially careful not to fall off ledges or hit their teammates.  Get Amped 2 tracks players’ rankings and stats.  It’s always fun to see where you rank and how you’ve improved from the previous day.  The game does a good job of slowly giving out rewards in the form of cash with which to purchase new costumes and weapons.  Even so, the game’s premise isn’t much different than before.  It doesn’t have the same level of detail as newer looking fighters like Lost Saga, but the graphics are better than the side-scrolling Mini Fighter Online.  In the end, this is a casual game specifically made with ease of play and low-end system settings in mind.  If you’re looking for a simple action-oriented MMO with no upfront costs,  you would do well to check out GetAmped 2.

Cabal Online review

Cabal Online is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG that used to be published by OGPlanet, but is now published by ESTsoft, the game’s developer. The game was officially released in North America on February 28th and is known for it’s unique set of features and solid gameplay. Start off your adventure in one of the game’s three newbie towns and explore the large fantasy world of Cabal Online. The game’s six playable classes are:
Warrior - As the name applies, the ‘warrior’ is the standard tank / melee character. The warrior relies entirely on his strength and uses the two handed sword as his main weapon.
Blader - Bladers are proficient at using dual swords and can deal damage very quickly but have incredibly low hit points. They are strong PvE characters, as they have high defense.
Wizard - The Wizard is the standard offensive spell caster archetype in Cabal. They can deal massive damage from a distance but are vulnerable to attacks in melee range. They have the lowest hit points in the game.
Force Blader – Force bladers are proficient with both spell casting and melee swords. They are quick and agile and can do a great deal of damage very quickly, but are unable to wear heavy armor. They are regarded as one of the best ‘pvp’ classes.
Force Shielder - Force Shielders are the standard ‘tank’ archetype in Cabal, they have the best defensive capabilities, but relatively weaker damage than the other melee classes in the game. They are capable of using both defensive and offensive magic and are considered strong ‘PvE’ characters.
Force Archer - As the name applies, the Force Archer is the generic ‘archer’ character in Cabal Online.
Cabal Online is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG by ESTsoft. The game has a fast paced combat system and looks a lot like a more graphically impressive Silkroad Online. The game has a fair amount of variety with its six playable classes and varied maps. The game certainly doesn’t reinvent the MMORPG genre, but it’s a polished fantasy title with a lot of unique features to explore.

The most innovative aspect of Cabal Online’s fast paced combat is the game’s combo system. After reaching level 10, players can use combo attacks which require players to time their attacks for them to do additional damage. This is an interesting system that I’d like to see other MMORPGs employ, because it spices up an otherwise incredibly boring and repetitive part of a game; the grinding. At least in Cabal Online, you can perform combos to keep you entertained while you grind. This feature became popularized in console RPGs and I’m glad that at least one MMORPG incorporated it into its combat, as it also adds skill into the combat. The more advanced a skill is, the harder it is to land perfect combos, so you’ll need to practice to get better.

Lord of War’ is the name of Cabal Online’s latest content update that introduced a lot of fun new features into the game, most obviously the new ‘Lord of War’ system. The ‘Lord of War’ which rewards the top players on the server each week with special bonuses and titles. Even though the content update is called ‘Lord of War’, it introduces a lot more to the game other than the PvP ranking system. It polished up a lot of the game’s existing features, introduced new skills, fixed countless bugs and also introduced both a party search system and an auction house. I’m surprised that it took a massive content update for Cabal Online to have an auction house, as there is no reason for such a feature to be excluded at launch for any modern MMORPG.

Cabal Online has an interesting level progression system that takes the old generic leveling up system and spices it up by adding one simple component; a reward every 10 levels. Every 10 levels, players in Cabal can upgrade their class level by completing a special quest, and upon the completion of that quest, players will be rewarded with access to new skills or special items. This isn’t exactly a revolutionary change from the ‘norm’, but it definitely spices up the gameplay a bit, and I’d like to see this sort of system incorporated into other games, as It adds another incentive for players to push themselves to get to the next level.

Honor is a big part of Cabal Online, because honor ranks can have a significant impact on your character’s stats. A player with a high honor rank gets a massive bonus to hit points, damage and all resistances. Players can gain honor by hunting monsters in special PvP zones and also by defeating enemy players in duels and PvP areas. Characters can lose honor just as fast as they gain it if they PK others or craft certain items. The most powerful craftable items usually require a large deal of honor to be sacrificed, so honor actually means a lot in Cabal. Plenty free MMORPGs usually incorporate some sort of PvP reward system, but no other game really rewards players as much as Cabal Online does for getting ‘honor’ and killing enemies in PvP zones.

Cabal uses a pretty….. for a lack of better words ‘unique’ method of combating botters and spammers by having a Captcha system in place for logging in and switching characters. If you’re not familiar with the term ‘Captcha’ they’re those distorted letters you have to type in to verify that you’re a human being when creating an account on most websites. Having to enter the captcha every time you switch characters and during the game at times can get terribly annoying, but it’s worth it if it stops botters and spammers, right? Well maybe it would be, but the fact is that it doesn’t eliminate the in game spam, as the chat box is usually full of someone advertising a site where you can purchase power leveling and currency for the game. You’d imagine if something didn’t work, it would get patched, but unfortunately it hasn’t happened yet.

Although Cabal Online doesn’t reinvent the MMORPG genre, it’s still a fun game to play, especially if you’ve already played a lot of the Free MMORPGs out there and are looking for something new to try. The game has a fun PvP system and an interested fast paced combat system with gorgeously animated graphics. The gameplay is extremely polished and is the game’s varied classes and environments will keep you coming for more. The game used to be published by OG Planet who also publishes LaTale, Rumble Fighter, Lost Saga and Hockey Dash, but is now being published by ESTsoft, the game’s original developer.
