Thrift Tip: Bread Sales 30-50% off

Bread is our alternative staple food from rice.  We can eat bread everyday for our breakfast, brunch, lunch, merienda (afternoon snack), dinner and midnight snack.  So if you want to save some cash then why not wait until the bread in the bakeries go on sale?  Thee are different shops that offer sales.  The choice is yours to pick.

• Dough Joe Bake House

          

Dough Joe is one of the newest bakeries in town.  It opened last year at Robinson's place Padre Faura Wing.  It offers almost the same variety of bread as its competitor Bread Talk.  From what we've noticed, it is ALWAYS on 50% sale on ALL breads since its grand opening last April 2010.     

• Cafe France

After Delifrance was purchase from Jollibee Food Corp., it has been rebranded as Cafe France.  They said they would focus more on the cafe side but they still maintained the same variety of pastries,  Everyday at around 7:30 p.m. (an hour later during Fridays and Saturdays), they offer a variety of pastries at 30% off.  The offers are different per branch.  In their Mall of Asia Branch, you can purchase any type of bread at 30% off but at the Robinson's Place Branch, only the ones set out at the table are on sale.

Getting Ready for the Sale

          The French Baker offers all of their left-over breads during their closing time 9:00 p.m. (an hour later during Fridays and Saturdays) at 50% off.  (Tip: Even the left over drinks)  The policy differs by branch.  

           In Robinson's Otis, there are rules.  You can line up as early as you want.  We only tried this branch thrice when we hanged out at the Starbucks there.  On three different days, the same scenario happened.  A driver will line up at 5:00 p.m.  He will start the line.  When 9:00 p.m. comes, he will be replaced by three women who will buy almost everything.  So don't expect anything good to be left when they are around.   But if they are not there, this branch has the least line so you can have chance to pick the bread you want.  

In Robinson's Place and Cash and Carry, it is very organized they have a guideline at the back of the number card.  But the Queuing rules were not strictly imposed.  But at least no matter how long the line is, everybody is able to buy some bread.  

In Mall of Asia, similar rules are implemented but you cannot stack the bread on the tray. 

In Unimart in Greenhills, only the person with the number can enter and select the bread he wants.  

But of course, it depends on the manager in charge whether the rules will differ or not and how it is implemented.  For example, one of the managers at Robinson's place start the sale at exactly 9:00 p.m. but then another manager starts the sale at 9:15 p.m. to maximize the sale.  The good thing is, whatever the rules are, as long as you are early and patient, you will be able to save some money.  Like the great Benjamin Franklin once said “He that can have Patience, can have what he will.”

I usually participate in the sale whenever I have time to kill.  I just bring out a book or a game console and I'm good waiting in line.  I don't mind if people say I'm poor.  I believe in the saying by Edmund Burke that "Frugality is founded on the principal that all riches have limits."
