Estes Brothers - Transitions (1971 us hard/psychedelic blues rock, 2002 reissue - MP3 320K and FLAC)

A long time in coming, but well worth to wait. This album contains the first efforts of a group that endured all the changes of the fast changing music scene.

I personally feel they have made all necessary transitions. Not only does the album contain beautiful slow type ballads, but it moves easily into Hard Rock in grand fashion.

Each member of the "Estes Brothers" puts forth fantastic energy and drive into each number and everyone gets his own style across in the last cut.

Lead guitarist, John Estes, and drummer, Joe Estes, have been together for as long as brothers can be. Don Smith and Bill Marren have both paid their dues in different groups.

We hope you take the album, relax and get right into the music. Share it with a friend! I feel this is only the beginning of some great music that will be hearing from the "Estes Brothers".

Anyone lucky enough to have heard the group perform will notice a definite change in their live music. This is an indication of varied talents each member possesses. In this, their first album, each of them has one of his own original numbers included.

This is advantageous as they do not depend solely upon one member for their material. Is it any wonder, with this type of attitude and talent, fame is predicted for the "Estes Brothers!"
(Milan R. Relic, Edcom Productions) 1971

The Estes Brothers are from a family of 7 brothers and 5 sisters. The beginning of Estes Bros. was late Bro. Bill on vocals and harmonica, Jerry keyboards, John guitar and late Bro. Joe on drums with Richard managing the band in 1966.

From 1966 till present there has been 38 different members and numerous styles of music, but always leading back to Blues and Rock.

At present, the band line up is Jerry as original member on keyboards and bass, John also original member on guitar, Jerry's son Brian, on drums and vocals, and our great friend and guitarist Dennis Caldwell.

When the album was done Jerry was in the army from 1969-71, but recorded on Tomorrow's Sunlight / Yesterdays Blues, Joe was 14, Jerry 15 and John 18, Fred Hauker played bass - the recording took 3 hrs! We wrote the songs on the way to the studio.

The album cost 500 Dollars to record and we only had 1 song written plus at that time Bill Marren had about 3 songs. It took 8 hrs of jamming and partying. Only one song "Wooden Thoughts" was rehearsed. And 100 demo copies were made.

"First CD-Reissue of US Hard/Blues-Psychedelic masterpiece recorded in Ohio 1971, an original lp is near impossible to find (only 100 pressed). The music is outstanding gutsy bluesy hard rock mixed with "THAT" lysergic blend of those late sixties S.F. bands like Quicksilver Messenger Service & Mad River - contains 8 bonus tracks (home and live recordings), informative booklet, original front cover and a couple of great & unseen photos. One of the best US psychedelic hard rock albums ever!"

Restaurant Review: The Old Spaghetti House at Robinson's Otis

The Old Spaghetti House is one of our favorite pasta place.  I recall the first time I've tried  The Old Spaghetti House (we used to call it TOSH for short) was way back in college days when they had their branch near DLSU.  My classmates used to go their for lunch.  We've tried many of their mall branches but its our first time to try out their Robinson's Otis branch.

We ordered their Appetizer Basket (210 php) for appetizer.  It contains Calamares, Chicken Fingers,Onion Rings and a mayo dip.

Appetizer Basket
For our main course we ordered Seafood Marinara (195 php), Eggplant Parmigiana w/ Penne Pomodoro (165 php), U.S. Beef Bistro Steak w/ Parmesan Spaghetti (245 php), Gambasetti (195 php) and I forgot the last dish.=(  They all tasted good.  I liked the Seafood Marinara the most.  Although it was similar to the Gambasetti, it was more flavorful since it has more ingredients.  Each had their own flavors to share.  Except for the U.S. Beef Bistro Steak w/ Parmesan Spaghetti.  It was a U.S. steak plus plain spaghetti.  The spaghetti had gravy as sauce.  I was expecting that the spaghetti would have its own definitive sauce but it was as if the spaghetti was just a rice substitute.  It was worth the experience but I would probably not order that again.

Because of the tempting signs all over the restaurant, we also ordered the Match Green Tea and Java Mocha for drinks.  The Match Green Tea was delicious!  I loved how it had a rich green tea taste that was not overpowered by sweetness and creamy texture.  On the other hand, I found the Java Mocha too sweet.  I already divided the drink into two glasses and added water to it just to make it tolerable and it was still too sweet!  It was like sugar milk.  I should've ordered the Match Green Tea instead.=(

For dessert, we always order the New York Cheese Cake.  Their cheese cakes are imported from the Cheese Cake Factory in the USA.  That's our favorite!   My little sister also wanted to try out their Strawberry Funnel Cake w/ Cream.  I'm not that fond of funnel cakes.  But it was good.  The texture was just right and it was not too sweet.

Overall, the meal was satisfactory.  The cost is average.  The service was a bit slow since there was only one server.  Their pasta is delicious as always.  We'' probably come back here again.

Transatlantic Railroad - Express To Oblivion ( late 60's san francisco psych rock - MP3 320k and FLAC)

Transatlantic Railroad was one of many late-'60s San Francisco psychedelic bands that did their share of live work in the region but barely recorded, remaining known almost exclusively to those who saw them play.

Based on the material that showed up in the early 2000s on the archival release Express to Oblivion, their talent was such that it didn't absolutely demand a record release.
Still, their bluesy psychedelia, heavy on guitar soloing and organ as well as unpredictable multi-sectioned original compositions, was representative of the second or third division of northern California psychedelic bands of the era.

The group formed at San Rafael High School in Marin County in 1965, and on its first show opened for the Grateful Dead, the night the Dead changed their name from the Warlocks.

A couple of unreleased 1966 tracks in a garage-folk-rock style showed up about 30 years later on the '60s Bay Area rarities compilation What a Way to Come Down.

Like many other groups from the area, Transatlantic Railroad moved into a harder psychedelic style shortly afterward, and released just one single, "Why Me /Irahs", on the Sire subsidiary Phoenix in 1968.

They also started work on an album, but it was abandoned after five demos.
It's been reported (in the psychedelic rock reference book Fuzz Acid & Flowers) that this came about when Geoff Mayer's large Hammond RT-3 organ wouldn't fit through the doors of the studio, and Mayer was unwilling to use other equipment.

Also according to the volume, the five completed demos can be heard on Express To Oblivion, which also has a couple of other lighter, less psychedelia-inclined tracks.

After the group broke up in the early '70s, guitarist and lead singer Kent Housman recorded or performed with Blue Cheer, the Ducks, and SFO. (by Richie Unterberger)
